Signs Your Pelvic Health May Be at Risk

Pelvic health isn’t just a women’s issue. Men also have a pelvic floor, a group of muscles and connective tissues that support the bladder and bowel, and play a vital role in sexual health.

When these muscles don’t work properly, your body gives you warning signs. Recognising them early can help prevent bigger problems later.

1. Leakage of Urine or Dribbling

  • Urine leaking when you cough, sneeze, lift, or exercise

  • Dribbling after urination (“post-micturition dribble”)

  • Urinary leakage after prostate surgery

👉 These are common, but not normal, pelvic physio can help restore control.

2. Pelvic Pain or Pressure

  • Ongoing pain in the perineum, testicles, penis, or lower abdomen

  • Pain that worsens when sitting or after long bike rides

  • Burning, tingling, or heaviness in the pelvic region

This may be linked to pelvic floor overactivity or nerve irritation (such as pudendal neuralgia).

3. Sexual Health Changes

  • Erectile difficulties or loss of rigidity

  • Premature ejaculation or difficulty with ejaculation

  • Pain during or after sex

These can be linked to pelvic floor dysfunction, tension, or circulation changes.

4. Bowel Problems

  • Straining with bowel movements

  • Constipation that doesn’t improve with diet alone

  • Difficulty controlling gas or stool

5. Recovery After Surgery

After prostate surgery or abdominal surgery, many men experience pelvic floor weakness. If leakage, pain, or pelvic discomfort persist, it’s a clear sign to seek help.

When to Seek Support

Pelvic health physiotherapists trained in men’s health can:

  • Assess pelvic floor strength and relaxation

  • Teach correct exercises (not just “Kegels”, sometimes relaxation is key)

  • Use biofeedback or ultrasound for precise training

  • Guide recovery after prostate surgery

  • Provide strategies for pelvic pain and sexual health

💡 Internal exams are never mandatory , there are external assessments too.

Men’s pelvic health is too often ignored, but symptoms like leakage, pain, or sexual changes are not normal signs of ageing. With physiotherapy and evidence-based care, most issues can be improved or resolved.
